Lyfsabeach web site...updated monthly

The Literacy Site is dedicated to funding free books for children.

On average, over 80,000 individuals from around the world visit the site each day to click the

"Click Here to Give - it's FREE" button. To date, more than 87 million visitors have helped provide

more than 1.6 million books to children who need them the most.

Within the U.S., access to books is essential to reading development: the only variable that

directly correlates with reading scores is the number of books in the home. However, most

recent data describes a profound, even shocking gap: while the ratio of books to children in

middle-income neighborhoods is approximately 13 books to 1 child, the ratio in low-income

neighborhoods is 1 book to 300 children.* In addition, over 80 percent of childcare centers

serving low-income children lack age-appropriate books. Together, The Literacy Site and its

domestic partner, First Book, provide children from low-income families in the U.S. with

books they can take home and keep.

Where the rich live:

The 10 priciest zip codes in America

and SIX are in California

There's a reason they made a hit TV series about the famed California zip code - 90210 is the richest place to live in all of America.

But the ski slopes of AspenColorado, are creeping up on the exclusive Beverly Hills locale when it comes to where the rich want to call home.

Coldwell Banker Real Estate's annual Luxury Market Report focuses on the value of luxury real estate in the United States and found that, outside New York City, 90210 had the most home sales over $10 million in 2012 with a total of 21 opulent properties being snapped up.

The zip code 81611 in Aspen came a close second with 16 homes selling for $10 million or more.

But, despite the après-ski, most millionaires - or billionaires - still prefer a place in the sun it seems, with eight out of the top 10 richest zip codes, excluding the Big Apple, being found in either California or Florida.

TOP 10 RICHEST ZIP CODES OUTSIDE OF NYC

1. 90210 Beverly HillsCalif.

2. 81611 AspenColo.

3. 93108 MontecitoCalif.

4. 90077 Bel Air, Calif. (LA)

5. 33139 Miami BeachFla.

6. 90049 BrentwoodCalif. (LA)

7. 90265 MalibuCalif.

8. 94027 AthertonCalif.

9. 06830 GreenwichConn.

10. 33156 MiamiFla.

The rankings are for zip codes, not cities. When it comes to cities, New York ranked first with 71 sales. Manhattan was followed by Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, both with 21.

'The activity we are seeing for trophy home sales speaks volumes about the value of these markets,' said Budge Huskey, president and CEO of Coldwell Banker.

'While California and New York may lead in $10 million and above sales, areas such as Aspen continue to appeal more and more to high-end buyers, with its gorgeous architecture, landscape and lifestyle.

'Overall, the luxury real estate market is doing incredibly well, giving us many markets to watch.'

The Montecito, California, zip code 93108 came in third with 15 sales for ultra-luxury homes followed by 90077 in Bel Air, California, where 10 properties sold for $10 million or more.

The area of New York City that saw the most homes sold for $10 million and up in 2012 was, unsurprisingly, the Upper East Side with 41 properties fetching such staggering prices.

This was followed by the Upper West Side and Downtown, which both had 12 ultra-expensive sales. Midtown East and Midtown West followed with five and one sales respectively.

When it comes to the highest volume of listings over $10 million, Malibu's zip code 90265 took the top spot with 65 for 2012. Beverly Hills came second with 58 listings and Aspen came third with 54.

Zip codes in the listing rankings that didn't feature in the top 10 for sales included 92651 in Laguna Beach, California, where 27 ultra-luxury homes were listed and 34102 in Naples, Florida, saw 22 pricey homes listed. It's unclear how many of these sold.

The pace of through-the-roof sales shows little sign of slowing, according to the Coldwell Baker. The real estate agent expect the ultra-luxury market to continue to break local price records in 2013 and even surpass a recent eye-watering $100 million sale near San Francisco.

'With the increasingly global nature of today's ultra-luxury market, it is hard to imagine that a $200 million sale would not be possible in the near future,' the report said.

Vodka – alternative uses

Aside from drinking, vodka has many other uses, some that can replace environmentally harsh chemicals we use around the home.

Given the lack of ingredients in unflavored vodka, it can be used as a substitute for many cleaners with an alcohol, caustic or solvent base, without leaving the item smelling like liquor.

Of course, good vodka isn’t cheap; so many of the the following ideas I found around the place are based on the assumption you have lost the taste for the stuff; or if you find yourself in a spot of bother and don’t have anything else to use… or if you have a good supply of dirt cheap vodka :).

Remember to always spot test before going all out with any of these suggested uses.

- To increase the life of cut flowers, add a few drops of vodka vase water along with 1 teaspoon sugar.

- Use it undiluted to remove ink stains from fabric (dab, don’t rub).

- Use undiluted vodka to remove paint from clothes.

- Vodka sprayed on areas where cats have peed or sprayed will remove the odor.

- A healthy splash of vodka in old water storage containers will help kill bacteria.

- Spray vodka on clothes to remove lingering odors

- Use vodka as a tile grout cleaner and to kill mold and mildew. Spray affected areas with undiluted vodka, let sit for a few minutes and then wipe off.

- A few drops of vodka will clean jewellery.

- Vodka can be used as a glass cleaner. Dilution recommendations vary, 25 – 50% vodka and the balance being water seems to be the general guideline. Use in a spray bottle.

- Use it to make vanilla extract. Place 4 vanilla pods in a jar and add a cup of vodka. Use an airtight lid and then place in a cool dark spot. Shake the jar occasionally and after two months you’ll have vanilla extract. Top up with vodka as you use it and only add more vanilla pods when it starts to lose potency.

- Spray onto old pot pourri to revitalise the scent.

- Use vodka it to remove hair dye from your skin.

- Vodka can help to remove tree sap from car paintwork.

- Add 1 part vodka to two parts water in a heavy duty zip lock bag and tape down the top. Freeze and use as a cold pack.

- Use undiluted as a weed killer spray.

- Spray undiluted into your washing machine to neutralize odors.
